History Title Map of Italy - Apulia region .gif

Apulia is located in Italy's south east section; Apulia (Pugliain Italian) is the wine region lying in the "heel" of Italy’s boot-shaped land mass.

There are over 260,000 vineyard acres planted with numerous grape varieties in this delightful region which is centered along the Adriatic Sea.

The primary red grapes are Negroamaro, Primitivo Malvasia Nera, and Uva di Troia.

The white grape varieties are led by Verdeca, and include Bianco d'Alessano, Bambino Bianco, Malvasia Bianca, and Trebbiano.

The wine output from this Southern Italian wine Mecca is tremendous, and competes with Sicily for the largest production of the country’s twenty wine regions.
The regions three main grapes are Negroamaro, Primitivo, and Malvasia Nera - all red. Also noteworthy is ‘Aleatico di Puglia’ a historic, sweet, high-alcohol dessert wine made with Aleatico grapes.

The wines of Puglia carry the following place designations: Salento, Daunia, Tarantino, and Valle d'Itria.
Salento wines are dark, robust, and full-bodied with ripe fruit flavours and high alcohol content. The Salento Peninsula with its arid terrain populated with palm trees and cactus plants affords a difficult soil, however combined with the cool evening breeze from the Adriatic the conditions are perfect for producing complex reds.
The grapes that make the ‘Rosso’ a dry red wine are mostly from the Uva di Troila or Aglianico variety. The white ‘Bianco’ is made from Chardonnay or the local grape Pampanuto. Both wines are soft and very dry.

The ‘Puglia’ region is versatile and extremely proud of its complex and important grape varieties.
